De Dana Dan

The performance of Akshay leads the laugh riot from the front. But he’s suddenly pushed to the back, much to the detriment of the film. Sadly, Katrina too looks completely out of sorts for most of the film. Just one question: Did someone else dub for her? Amongst the others, it’s Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever and Suneil Shetty who manage to hold your attention; the rest are too loud, specially Manoj Joshi.Dialogs are mostly silly, hardly funny.

Priyadarshan’s plot is too loose, too long, too scattered to hold your attention. Most of the comedy is slapstick and stems from situational goof-ups.

Pritam’s music isn’t inspired this time. None of the songs have shelf life. The only one which mildly moves you is Paisa, the Katrina-Akshay duet belted by a Punjabi pop band.Unimpressive dance moves by Ganesh Acharya. The fashion aesthete is forgettable too. The girls look ordinary in their dresses and the guys sport the boy-next-door look.

Aao Wish Karein

Every kid imagines what it would be like to be an adult. He wishes he could grow up quicker. Of course, once he grows up, a small part of him wishes he could go back to his childhood days. Quite an irony, isn’t it?

There’s a line in AAO WISH KAREIN that goes, ‘If you want to be a part of a fairy tale, it’s important that you believe in it [fairy tale].’ The statement is applicable for everyone desirous of watching AAO WISH KAREIN.

In terms of concept, AAO WISH KAREIN bears a striking resemblance to the Tom Hanks starrer BIG [1988]. A decade-and-a-half ago, the Salman Khan – Sridevi starrer CHANDRAMUKHI also tackled a similar theme. In that respect, the concept isn’t alien at all.

It’s not sacrilegious if a film bears an uncanny resemblance to another film [it could be a coincidence], but films like these need to be well-structured and most importantly, supported by incredible actors who can make you believe in fairy tales. Also, the makers ought to take a stand at the very outset: Should it be targeted at kids or youth? You just cannot sit on the fence. In this case, you don’t know if AAO WISH KAREIN is aimed at the kids or is it a breezy romantic flick, targeted at the youth. All said, AAO WISH KAREIN has some endearing moments, but not enough to salvage it.

12-year-old Mickey’s life was almost like a fairy tale: A beautiful family, best buddy Bonnie and his angel on earth – Mitika [Aamna Sharif]. One fateful day, Mickey’s fairy tale is shattered into a million pieces. He realizes he’s an adopted child and his 23-year-old angel Mitika too calls him a kid. A heart-broken Mickey sits all by himself until Hitchcock [Johny Lever] appears.

Mickey hopes for a miracle to happen. He wishes to become big. To his astonishment, he wakes up next morning and realizes that his wish has been granted. He has indeed turned big. But was this miracle a blessing or a curse in disguise?

The choice of the subject is perfect. But there’s an inherent flaw in the story and that is, the 12-year-old kid seems to be in love with the pretty woman, but the moment his wish his granted and he transforms into a grown up man overnight, he continues to behave like a kid. Romance, therefore, just doesn’t exist and even if it does, it’s far from exciting.

Ideally, the writing would’ve worked had the kid-turned-grown up behaved like a grown up.

The culmination to the story is well penned, but, again, it might not work in entirety. The writers could’ve run their imagination wild, given the fact that they were writing a fairy tale, instead of taking the safe route here. Director Glen Barretto has handled a few individualistic scenes well, especially the ones between Aftab and Johny Lever. Music is soothing to the ears, but the non-promotion or lack of popularity will make the effort go unnoticed. At the same time, there are too many songs in the second hour, which weren’t required frankly. Keshav Prakash’s cinematography is top notch. The locales of Himachal Pradesh and Goa are well captured on celluloid by the DoP.

Aftab pitches in a sincere performance. He looks the character. Aamna is easy on the eyes, although the role doesn’t demand histrionics. Johny Lever is first-rate. Rati Agnihotri is good. Yatin Karyekar is alright. The kids are full of energy. Riteish Deshmukh makes a brief appearance towards the end.

On the whole, AAO WISH KAREIN is engaging in parts, but how one wishes the film would grab your attention in entirety. The wish of striking a chord and hence, succeeding at the box-office won’t come true for this reason.

KURBAAN

Just like Ayan Mukerji’s Wake Up Sid, Rensil D'silva's directorial debut Kurbaan lies far way from the typical Johar territory- often marked by hotties prancing around in chiffon saris with SRK, surrounded by countless junior artists. It is a dark love story of a New York based Delhi girl Avantika (Kareena Kapoor), who becomes a victim of professor Ehsaan Khan’s (Saif Ali Khan) 'love jihad'.

After a whirlwind romance, the two tie the knot and move into innocuous Indian neighbourhood in the Big Apple. But everything is not as hunky dory as it seems, Avantika finds it out the hard way from her neighbour in distress, Salma (Nauheed Cysrusi).

What follows next, is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue. As her life spirals out of control, Avantika realizes that she is just a pawn in Bhai Jaan’s (Om Puri) huge game and no one is to be trusted. Not even Ehsaan. Like a true fanatic he does what he thinks the Lord would do if He knew the facts of the case.

Now her only hope is Riyaz Masood (Vivek Oberoi) and together they strive to save land of the free from another terror catastrophe.

In his 2 hour 40 minutes long thriller, Rensil clearly demonstrates how wisdom becomes nonsense in the mouth of a fanatic. The antagonists here are not rabid mullahs but the suave intellectuals who are blinded by their hate for the infidels. But one should never judge a religion by its nutcases. So, the 35-minute long chilling climax justifiably puts an end to their nefarious designs and upholds the truth that all extremism in the name of religion is bad, no matter what the provocation is.

Kurbaan is not only high on content but a well-packaged product too. Salim-Suleiman’s music and background score adds to the intensity of the film. Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are scathing.

The film also sees some of the best performances of the year as well. While Saif as Ehsaan evokes both contempt and empathy, Kareena’s Avantika looks clearly torn between her love and hate for him. Vivek Oberoi also makes a grand comeback as an actor in the film.

It goes without saying that Om Puri clearly excels in his part as a mastermind but it is Kirron Kher who takes the cake away from the quinquagenarian actor. It’s a big, big relief not to see her playing the loud Punjabi mother for once and that too in a Karan Johar flick. Nauheed Cyrusi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and especially Dia Mirza excel in the cameos.

All in all, Kurbaan is must watch for all those yearning for a sensible cinema. It shows the futility of a fanatic’s version of jihad and reaffirms that the most excellent jihad (struggle) is that for the conquest of self.

Tum Mile

Ali Taha (Emraan) meets Sanjana (Soha) on board of their flight to Mumbai from Cape Town. Here on the film proceeds on and back and forth narrative revealing them being ex-lovers. Six years back then Ali was a art student and had lost his heart to the activist Sanjana. They both had progressed to a live in relationship in quick time as well. But monetary issues leading to ego clashes had broken their relationship apart. After arriving in Mumbai on the ill fated day of 26th July 2005, they go onto encounter the biggest floods in the history of Mumbai. The rest of the film is about the couple battling for their lives after being stuck in the rain and floods. In their struggle for survival, they learn more about each other and things which they had not known in all those years of being together.

Emraan is only getting better with each passing film and in here as well he is very impressive. Soha Ali Khan delivers her best performance till date going through a gamut of expressions with amazing ease. Amongst the rest cast the only one to leave a mark is debutant RJ Mantra. He is very good playing Emraan’s buddy.

Kunal Deshmukh’s shows technical department improvement after his debut film Jannat. His treatment of the love story though somewhat predictable is good as well. But we most often keep sensing that the flood situation things which appear more thrilling have completely deliberately taken a back seat with the flash back and romance between the lead pair taking more prominence. This all leads to the film being boring at many places. There was a recent news item that Mahesh Bhatt cut short the flood shots to give more importance to the romantic track. Well not a wise decision we may say. The stock footage of the floods and the computer graphics are a let down at many places but the one thing that doesn’t dissappoint is the film’s music. Pritam deserves full marks for his consistency in delivery great music which is already ruling the charts along with his score for last Friday’s release Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Camerawork by Prakash Kutty is very good. The effort gone in recreating the flood situation is commendable as well.

Tum Mile is more of a romantic film with the natural disaster backdrop added for effect. If you are going in expecting India’s first disaster movie then you will be in for a major disillusionment. So choose it at your own preference.
